Department of Neurosurgery

Introduction

The Department of Neurosurgery of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital traces its roots back to the 1960s. Initially led by Professor Tao Jiahua, Directors He Zhengrong and Rong Boying took charge during Professor Tao's overseas studies. In 1994, Professor Xu Tao assumed the directorship, spearheading expansion initiatives and the establishment of the Neurosurgery ICU in 1999, leading to significant growth for the department. Professor Xu Tao served as Deputy Chairman of Neurosurgery Branch of Shanghai Medical Association. Backbones like Tian Hengli, Hu Jin, Gu Binxian, Chen Shiwen and Guo Yan joined the ranks, contributing to the department's advancement. In 2007, Professor Tian Hengli assumed leadership, ushering in a new era of development in clinical practice, scientific research, and talent cultivation. In 2019, Chief Physician Ding Wanhai joined and established Functional Neurosurgery. The department has since become a nationally authorized training base for specialist neurosurgeons and resident neurosurgeons, ranking 13th in the China's Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics Rankings. Professor Tian Hengli has been recognized as Shanghai Leading Talent and currently serves as a member of the Neurosurgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Traumatology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association.

Specialties

The department boasts a robust team of experts and comprehensive sub-specialties. While maintaining proficiency in treating critical cranial and neurological conditions, it has expanded into areas such as neuro-oncology, cerebrovascular diseases, spinal disorders, functional neurosurgery and peripheral nerve diseases. Recent enhancements include the establishment of a Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU), ward expansions, and the commissioning of a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room in late 2015.
