Department of Stomatology

Introduction

Established on April 2, 1949, the Department of Stomatology of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital has played a pivotal role in medical teaching and research in oral health over the past 74 years. It is affiliated with prestigious organizations such as the Oral Restoration Specialty Committee and the Oral Implantation Specialty Committee of the Chinese Stomatological Association, as well as being recognized as a standing member of the International Association of Oral Implantology and serving as a Vice Chairman unit of the Shanghai Oral Medicine Association. Additionally, it serves as the chairman unit of the Oral Implantation Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association, the Executive Committee of the Oral Restoration Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association, a member unit of the Management Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Hospital and the deputy chairman unit of the Oral Nursing Committee of the Shanghai Stomatological Association. The department actively contributes to expert consensus discussions on maxillary sinus lift and 3D printed titanium mesh. Several members, including young members, are actively involved in various aspects of dentistry.

The Department of Stomatology is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including a comprehensive dental treatment table, dental CBCT machine, panoramic positioning X-ray machine, dental X-ray machine, implant machine, porcelain machine, orthodontic instruments, scaler, sandblasting machine, high-pressure sterilization oven, and various advanced equipments such as digital 4D mandibular movement tracker, root canal microscope, CAD/CAM surface scanner/chamber scanner/grinder, digital guide plate printer, CGF preparation instrument and oral laser instrument. With extensive experience in a wide range of dental procedures including tooth extraction, fillings, dentures, deformity correction, dental implants, oral mucosal diseases, orofacial surgery and trauma treatment, the department specializes in immediate restoration of digitally guided implants for patients with complete edentulous jaws. Committed to relieving patients' pain and restoring their dental function, the Department of Stomatology continually strives to enhance patients' quality of life.

Specialties

1. Implantation: Currently, a set of treatment methods for implant surgery, restoration and peri-implantitis has been developed. Based on summarizing experiences, we have introduced the concept of implant re-implantation and peri-implantitis for the first time in China. We have also made attempts in the treatment of peri-implantitis, achieving satisfactory results and improving implant quality. The implant center has launched various clinical projects including implant restoration for complex dentition defect and edentulous, aesthetic restoration for anterior implants, full-mouth implant occlusal reconstruction, digital implant guided navigation technology, as well as implant restoration for complex cases involving systemic conditions such as diabetes and osteoporosis. Standardized and effective operational procedures have been established for bone tissue augmentation, occlusal reconstruction, aesthetic restoration and diagnosis and treatment of peri-implantitis.

2. Repair of missing/defective teeth:

  • Cosmetic restoration of anterior teeth: Utilizing CAD-CAM technology, the department offers customized crown and bridge restorations for anterior teeth, ensuring aesthetic, durable and natural-looking results. Widely applicable to cases of extensive anterior tooth defects or loss. Cases such as fractured anterior crowns, abnormal color or morphology of anterior teeth.
  • Fixed and fixed-removable denture repair: We have also explored techniques such as precision attachment dentures, telescopic crown dentures, magnetic attachment overlay dentures, porcelain crown and bridge restorations. Compared to traditional removable dentures, they have the advantages of being aesthetically pleasing, comfortable and strong in chewing ability, effectively protecting the abutment teeth. Widely applicable for the restoration of dentition defect in most patients with tooth loss and periodontal disease.
  • Traditional removable dentures: We offer economical and practical options for patients requiring full-mouth tooth loss repair.

3. Orthodontics: Malocclusion not only affects facial aesthetics but also impacts individuals' physical and mental health. Dental and jaw abnormalities caused by malocclusion can lead to abnormal oral chewing function, pronunciation and even respiratory function, thereby adversely affecting overall growth and development, and potentially causing psychological abnormalities. Correcting malocclusion in adolescents can promote healthier growth. Early correction of malocclusion in children can prevent and block mild malocclusion from progressing to more severe conditions. Common orthodontic treatment for adolescents and adults involves facial aesthetic analysis, design and guidance, aiming to achieve oral and facial health and aesthetics. Addressing malocclusion and dental deformities, the department provides traditional fixed orthodontic treatments as well as digital-assisted orthodontic solutions for precise and efficient tooth alignment. Additionally, it offers transparent invisible orthodontics and oral treatments for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

4. Treatment of dental pulp disease: Caries is one of the common and prevalent diseases in humans. When the lesion progresses deep into the tooth, it can lead to complications such as pulp diseases, periapical diseases and jaw inflammation. The treatment of caries mainly includes non-surgical treatment (medication, remineralization therapy, pit and fissure sealant), filling and restorative treatment. Depending on the extent of pulp damage, different treatment methods can be chosen for pulp diseases. Our department has extensive experience in the treatment of dental caries and pulp diseases. Suitable materials are used to fill the cavities and restore the defects, thus restoring the form and function of the teeth. For teeth with large dental caries and poor retention, restorative treatments such as full crowns and inlays can be used simultaneously. By using various treatment methods for pulp diseases, the shape and function of  teeth are effectively restored, preserving the integrity of the dentition.

5. Integrated crown-root treatment: The loss of teeth results in the loss of periodontal ligament, leading to alveolar bone atrophy, which adversely affects the stability of dentures. By preserving tooth roots through complete root canal treatment, the department facilitates fixed denture placement to restore dentition defects and maintain long-term oral health.

6. Minimally invasive tooth extraction: In complex tooth extractions, we adhere to the concept of minimally invasive procedures and flexibly employ advanced techniques. For instance, utilizing small incisions and introducing surgical power systems to assist in tooth extraction allows for precise removal of resistance. Essentially discarding traditional methods like bone chiseling and crown splitting, this approach significantly reduces patients' discomfort and fear to the maximum extent possible. It alleviates postoperative reactions associated with complex tooth extractions, decreases complications and enhances patient satisfaction.

7. Periodontal disease: Providing comprehensive periodontal care, the department addresses both periodontal tissue diseases and associated tooth pulp lesions. Through multidisciplinary treatment strategies, it aims to correct periodontal issues and restore optimal chewing function.

8. Oral mucosal diseases: With specialized expertise in diagnosing and treating oral mucosal diseases, the department offers personalized care for conditions such as oral lichen planus and recurrent aphthous ulcers.

9. Non-surgical treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders: Utilizing advanced equipments and techniques such as kava mandibular kinesiograph and Zebris mandibular trajectory tester, the department offers non-surgical treatments for temporomandibular joint disorders to alleviate symptoms and restore normal chewing function. Through precise diagnosis and personalized treatment plans, the department enhances patients' outcomes and overall quality of life.
