The Department of Emergency Medicine of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, founded in 1986, has become a national key clinical discipline specializing in trauma first aid, and swift and standardized diagnosis and treatment on a variety of acute, critical, challenging and complex diseases. It provides ultra-large-scale and high-quality emergency treatment services covering a broad spectrum of critical, acute, and severe illnesses, as well as social emergencies. With a balanced focus on clinical practice, scientific research, and teaching, the department leads the nation in both academic excellence and clinical capacity. Moreover, it holds international recognition for its expertise in acute injury control and trauma repair.

The Department of Emergency Medicine consistently ranks second among all tertiary hospitals in Shanghai in terms of outpatient visits, with approximately 860,000 emergency patients seen annually. Additionally, it holds the top position among all tertiary hospitals in Shanghai for inpatient admissions, admitting around 12,000 patients per year. This includes the highest number of trauma and AECOPD cases as single diseases managed through hospitalization.

Moreover, the department upholds exemplary quality control standards for both emergency and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admissions, consistently ranking in the top third across Shanghai each year. The department has completed the construction of subdisciplines, including the integrated construction of first-aid and EICU, the construction of acute trauma orthopedics, the formations of acute coronary syndrome emergency teams, acute craniocerebral trauma teams, difficult, acute and severe disease diagnosis and treatment teams, and the establishment of acute stroke center.
