Department of Radiation Oncology

Introduction

The Department of Radiation Oncology of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital stands as a national and regional training hub for residents, specialists, and master's degree students in radiation oncology. With 40 beds, we maintain longstanding partnerships with renowned cancer centers at universities in Germany, the United States, and Singapore. Our team comprises 43 staff members, including one chief physician, two associate chief physicians, and six attending physicians, all holding doctoral degrees. More than 50% of our staff members have international study experience. Equipped with cutting-edge treatment facilities, we utilize the Varian VitalBeam and Elekta Infinity accelerators, the Intrabeam mobile intraoperative radiotherapy system, the Elekta Flexitron high-dose-rate brachytherapy system, and the GE Discovery RT wide-bore simulation CT. Additionally, we employ advanced planning systems such as Varian ECLIPSE, Philips PINNACLE, Varian ARIA, and Elekta MOSAIQ, ensuring a high standard of care and precision in treatment planning.

Specialties

We have implemented the world's most advanced radiotherapy techniques, including image-guided intensity-modulated radiotherapy, three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, volumetric modulated arc therapy, four-dimensional dynamic therapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, adaptive radiotherapy, intraoperative radiotherapy, and brachytherapy. We consistently perform precise localization, develop personalized treatment plans, and deliver accurate radiation therapy. Furthermore, we are dedicated to advancing research in three-dimensional conformal MRI-guided brachytherapy. We excel in specialized areas such as the comprehensive radiation treatment and management of cervical cancer, curative treatments for nasopharyngeal cancer, skull base, and head and neck tumors, along with integrated approaches for managing severe post-radiotherapy bleeding. We also offer specialized radiation therapy for bone and soft tissue tumors and engage in multidisciplinary cancer treatments.

Our department has spearheaded nearly 20 research projects, published over a hundred papers, contributed to six specialized textbooks, and has been instrumental in training numerous master's and doctoral candidates. We have trained five specialist radiotherapy oncologists and have successfully completed collaborative support missions to hospitals in Kashgar, Xinjiang, and the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan.
