Introduction

The Department of Ultrasound in Medicine of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital stands as the cradle of ultrasound diagnosis in China, wielding a distinguished reputation and significant influence. Recognized as a national key clinical discipline, it holds pivotal status as Shanghai Top-Priority Key Imaging Discipline, Shanghai Top-Priority Medical Imaging Research Center, and Key Discipline of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Furthermore, it houses Shanghai Key Laboratory for Neuroultrasound Imaging Diagnosis and Treatment. Additionally, it is home to Shanghai Municipal Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (at the 4A level) and Shanghai Training Center for Ultrasound in Medicine. It has established an ultrasound technician training center in partnership with Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences. Notably, it operates as the training center for master's and doctoral degrees candidates and the postdoctoral station in imaging medicine of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

In 1958, the department established a hospital-affiliated ultrasound medical research laboratory. By 1960, this laboratory had gained approval as a bureau-affiliated ultrasound medical research facility, serving as a training base for ultrasound under the Ministry of Health and becoming a prominent hub for talent development in ultrasound diagnosis in China. Presently, the department boasts five doctoral supervisors and five master's supervisors, with a strong emphasis on talent cultivation, including nine individuals at the national level and twelve at the provincial level. In recent years, the department has obtained numerous national-level projects, including several from the National Key Research and Development Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China Key Projects, the National Natural Science Foundation of China International Cooperation Projects, and several projects from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. It has been honored with titles such as the "Shanghai Model Innovation Studio" (2014), "National Advanced Collective in the Health System" (2017), and the "Shanghai Worker Pioneer" (2019).

Guided by esteemed leaders such as former Director Professor Zhou Yongchang, current Discipline Leader Professor Hu Bing, Vice President Zheng Yuanyi, and Executive Deputy Director Ying Tao, the Department of Ultrasound in Medicine has emerged as a beacon of excellence in ultrasound diagnosis and treatment. Embracing a multidisciplinary approach, the department encompasses a wide array of sub-disciplines, including abdominal ultrasound, obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound, cardiovascular ultrasound, sports medicine (musculoskeletal nerves) ultrasound, interventional ultrasound and emergency and critical care ultrasound.
