The Department of Nephrology of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital was established in 1991. It has since become a cornerstone discipline of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and a key specialty of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital. Serving as a core unit of the National Chronic Kidney Disease Clinical Center and a designated teaching demonstration ward of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, it holds several prestigious titles including the Clinical Translational Center for Kidney Diseases of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Chronic Kidney Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Uremia Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and the branch center of the Institute of Nephrology of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Additionally, it serves as the master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral stations of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Over the years, it has evolved into an advanced medical, teaching, scientific research, and talent development hub in both Shanghai and the nation. Upholding the tenet of "patient-centered care," the medical professionals are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical services to patients.

Specialties

Aligned with national disease prevention and treatment requirements and leveraging our strengths, the department has developed a comprehensive clinical research system known as the "six-in-one" approach. This system integrates the management of diabetic nephropathy, acute kidney injury, and chronic kidney disease, the application of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine in kidney disease management, blood purification, and peritoneal dialysis. Fueled by a rigorous and dynamic clinical and academic team, the department specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of various acute and chronic kidney diseases, with a particular emphasis on the standardized diagnosis and treatment of diabetic nephropathy.

Operating with 75 beds, the department facilitates nearly 4,000 discharges and over 150,000 outpatient visits annually. We prioritize the diagnosis and treatment of complex and critical kidney diseases, achieving a nationally advanced level success rate in the rescue of critically ill patients. Equipped with 124 hemodialysis machines and 25 CRRT machines, we administer various blood purification technologies, including hemodialysis, hemoperfusion, plasmapheresis, lipid apheresis, CRRT, and artificial liver therapy. Currently, we serve more than 450 maintenance hemodialysis patients and over 500 maintenance peritoneal dialysis patients, with dialysis quality that ranks among the best in Shanghai. With an annual average of more than 400 kidney biopsies, the department plays a pivotal role in advancing the diagnosis and treatment of complex kidney diseases.

Moreover, the department places a strong emphasis on scientific and clinical research, particularly in areas such as diabetic nephropathy, acute and chronic kidney injury, and the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine in nephropathy prevention and treatment. We have developed a research system centered around diabetic nephropathy and have been recognized with multiple awards and accolades, including the second prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, and the second prize of the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award, and the first prize of China's Science and Technology Award for Integrative Medicine. Furthermore, we have contributed to the establishment of numerous clinical practice guidelines and consensus statements on diabetic nephropathy endorsed by the National Health Commission. In 2022, the department was ranked 13th nationally and 2nd in Shanghai in the China’s Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) rankings in Nephrology.
