Introduction

With a rich and illustrious history, the Department of General Surgery has been graced by the expertise of the esteemed Professor Qiu Fazu, who served as a consultant in general surgery. Notably, in 1963, Professor Qian Yunqing and Professor Chen Zhongwei achieved the world's first successful hand replantation, earning accolades from the Ministry of Health. Pioneering achievements continued with the first report of reconstruction surgery using artificial blood vessels after carotid aneurysm resection in 1964, and the completion of the first massive thoracoabdominal aortic resection and artificial blood vessel transplantation in China in 1965. Over the years, groundbreaking advancements, such as regional arterial infusion of chemotherapy drugs for advanced gastric cancer and the establishment of China's first gastric adenocarcinoma cell line, have propelled the department to the forefront of medical innovation. Under the leadership of Professor Zheng Qi, the department conducted its inaugural clinical orthotopic liver transplantation in 2004, marking a significant milestone in its legacy. Today, under the stewardship of Professor Huang Xinyu, the department continues to spearhead key projects in the Ministry of Science and Technology, cementing its status as a leader in the field. General Surgery stands as a pinnacle discipline within the hospital, boasting a cadre of renowned domestic surgical experts proficient in addressing all challenging and critical surgeries. It serves as the national residency aining base and a site for master's and doctoral training at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The department offers a comprehensive array of sub-disciplines, including hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, thyroid and breast hernia surgery, bariatric and metabolic surgery, vascular surgery, and emergency surgery.

Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery
Comprising 15 clinicians, including 13 with doctorate degrees, and 10 senior professional titles, this specialty is at the forefront of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgical innovation. With significant contributions to national and international surgical associations, the specialty has undertaken numerous key projects and published over 100 SCI papers. Specializing in the precise diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant tumors, the specialty offers cutting-edge procedures, including open, laparoscopic, and endoscopic treatments for biliary tract diseases. Pioneering techniques such as periportal surgery for hilar and biliary tract tumors underscore the specialty's commitment to advancing surgical care.

Gastrointestinal Surgery
With a team of 14 clinicians, including 12 doctorate degree holders, this specialty leads in the diagnosis and treatment of complex colorectal cancers and gastric cancer. Renowned for its innovative approaches such as natural orifice specimen extraction surgery and endoscopic/robotic tumor resection, the specialty provides comprehensive care for patients with gastrointestinal tumors. Pioneering techniques like selective D3 surgery for gastric cancer and pancreas-preserving splenic artery trunk lymph node resection highlight the specialty's dedication to improving patient outcomes.

Thyroid and Breast Hernia Surgery
Comprising 17 doctors, including 9 with doctorate degrees, this specialty excels in innovative techniques for thyroid and breast cancer surgery. Renowned for its transareolar single-port and submental single-port endoscopic thyroid surgery, the specialty offers advanced surgical options for complex and locally advanced thyroid cancers. Additionally, the specialty specializes in radical breast cancer surgery and breast-conserving procedures, providing patients with comprehensive and personalized care.

Bariatric Metabolic Surgery 
With a focus on laparoscopic surgery for obesity and type 2 diabetes, this specialty pioneers innovative approaches to metabolic disorders. Offering procedures such as gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy, the specialty leads in the management and long-term care of postoperative patients. As the main management unit of the bariatric metabolic surgery database in Shanghai, the specialty ensures the highest standards of care and patient outcomes.

Vascular Surgery
Specializing in minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins and arterial occlusive lesions, this specialty offers state-of-the-art procedures for vascular disorders. With expertise in radiofrequency ablation and minimally invasive thrombectomy, the specialty provides comprehensive care for patients with complex vascular conditions. Emergency Surgery
