Department of Pharmacy

The Department of Pharmacy of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital has evolved into a comprehensive institution that integrates healthcare, teaching, manufacturing, research, and administration through generations of dedicated efforts. Across the Xuhui and Lingang campuses, the department encompasses more than 20 ancillary units, including various specialized pharmacies (outpatient, herbal medicine, inpatient, emergency room, fever, pediatric, healthcare station, and Pharmacy Intravenous Admixture Services(PIVAS)), along with prescription verification center, clinical pharmacy department, therapeutic drug monitoring department, warehouse, and quality control department. The department oversees affairs of the Pharmacy Management and Therapeutics Committee, ensures normal operation of pharmacies, and facilitates rational use of medications. It executes a range of core pharmacy functions, which involve clinical pharmacy services, drug policy implementation, drug procurement, Antibiotic Stewardship, regulation of controlled substances, pharmacovigilance, and quality audits. Additionally, it fosters the translation of pharmaceutical research outcomes into practice, resulting in continuous improvement in the quality of pharmacy services and administration and forming a distinctive quality assurance system and management model. The department has consistently ranked first in Shanghai's quality control inspections of pharmacy affairs and has been awarded "Outstanding Institution for Clinical Pharmacy Affair Administration" in Shanghai for years.

Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital boasts a rich history in clinical pharmacy. In the early 1980s, Professor Zhang Nansen, a respected authority in clinical pharmacy, introduced the concept of clinical pharmacists to China. She established the nation's first batch of clinical pharmacy bases at Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, from where the exploration and practice of personalized medication therapy management began. Over the years, the department has enhanced the framework of clinical pharmacist systems, expanded the team of clinical pharmacists, and promoted evidence-based clinical pharmacy services in infectious disease, oncology, anticoagulation, analgesia, and respiratory disease, which has promoted the integration of clinical pharmacists into the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

At present, clinical pharmacy services are available throughout the hospital, with clinical pharmacists practicing on-site tailored to the hospital's specialties, including orthopedics, ICU, oncology, general surgery, respiratory disease, cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology, and neurology. In 2016, the Department of Pharmacy was designated as one of the first core clinical pharmacy specialties in Shanghai, further enhancing the development of a cluster of clinical pharmacy specialties aligned with the hospital's core disciplines and services.

The journey of the Department of Pharmacy is marked by an unwavering commitment to its founding principles, continuously striving toward its mission. In the era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, aligned with national healthcare goals and the well-being of the people, all members of the Pharmacy Department will uphold the ethos of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, "Love, Dedication, Innovation, and Friendship", working together to achieve success through perseverance and determination.
