Department of Cardiology

Introduction

Our Cardiology has been certified as National Key Discipline, recognized for the department’s excellence in patient care and academic endeavors. It serves as a cornerstone of medical education and practice within Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and a designated training base for coronary artery intervention and arrhythmia intervention by National Health Commission.

The Heart Center of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital stands out as one of China's largest clinical medical centers dedicated to cardiovascular care. It is among the earliest to pioneer interventional diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases in China.

The department comprises 5 major centers: the Chest Pain Center, Heart Failure Center, Atrial Fibrillation Center, Hypertension Certification Center, and Cardiac Rehabilitation Center. It boasts four independent catheter labs that adhere to high-quality and high standards. In 2023 alone, the total number of operations surpassed 7,000 cases.

Specialties

Founded in 1957, the Department of Cardiology initially focused on right heart catheterization. Over the years, it has expanded its services to include the establishment of the Cardiovascular Laboratory (1978) and the Heart Function Examination Room (1987), offering non-invasive cardiac function tests. From the late 1980s to early 1990s, the department introduced advanced technologies such as coronary angiography (CAG) and intravascular thrombolysis for acute myocardial infarction (AMI), alongside other critical procedures like defibrillation and pacemaker installations.

By 2023, the department had expanded its facilities to include the Cardiac Catheterization Room, Electrophysiology Room, Heart Function Examination Room and Cardiomagnetic Center. Its comprehensive diagnostic and treatment capabilities cover a wide range of cardiovascular diseases, including interventional treatment for coronary heart disease, congenital heart defects, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, valvular heart disease, and peripheral vascular conditions. Many of its technologies, such as radial artery intervention for coronary artery disease, arrhythmia intervention, left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO), and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), are at the forefront of medical innovation in China.
