About Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital


Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital, established in 1904, has earned global recognition as the birthplace of groundbreaking medical innovations. Renowned as the cradle of amputated limb replantation worldwide, it is also credited as the pioneer of the "China Hand" techniques and the originator of ultrasound diagnosis in China.

In recent assessments, the hospital has achieved impressive standings, including 25th in the Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) for Chinese Hospitals, 28th in China's Hospital Rankings by Fudan University, 63rd in the Nature Index Table of Worldwide Healthcare Institutions, and 12th in China's Hospital Ranking for Innovation and Transformation.

With a capacity of 2,566 licensed beds, the hospital catered to a significant number of patients, handling 5,397,077 outpatient and emergency visits, 179,993 patient discharges, and performing 121,270 surgeries in 2023.

The hospital has garnered acclaim for its excellence across eight National Key Clinical Specialties, three National Key Disciplines, and one Key Specialty designated by National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It holds certifications as National Model of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practice for General Hospitals, Shanghai Municipal Flagship Hospital for Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, and Shanghai Municipal Center for Trauma Emergency and Care.

Additionally, it has established various prestigious institutions including National Primary Diabetes Prevention and Treatment Office, Shanghai Institute of Microsurgery on Extremities, Shanghai Diabetes Institute, Shanghai Key Laboratory for Diabetes, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Sleep Disordered Breathing, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Neuro-Ultrasound for Diagnosis and Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Orthopaedic Material Innovation and Tissue Regeneration. In 2022, Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital received approval to establish National Center for Orthopedics.

Recognized as an incubator for pioneering scientific breakthroughs, the hospital boasts three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Engineering, two chief scientists of the National Basic Research Program (973 Program), seven Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions recognized by National Health Commission, and six recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. 

Throughout its history, the hospital continues to lead in medical innovation and has amassed 309 awards for scientific research achievements at the national, provincial/ministerial, and bureau levels. Notable accolades include one First Prize of the National Invention Award and nine Second Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Awards.
