Department of Osteoporosis and Bone Diseases

Introduction

The Department of Osteoporosis and Bone Diseases of Shanghai Sixth People's Hospital was independently established in 1993. It serves as a training center for doctoral candidates at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and is a key discipline of our hospital, a National Key Specialty of the Ministry of Health, and a Shanghai Top-Priority Key Discipline. It functions as the national base for osteoporosis diagnosis and quality control standard testing, as well as the national base for osteoporosis training, diagnosis, and treatment cooperation. In 2018, the Center for Clinical Diagnosis, Treatment, and Research of Difficult Bone Diseases was founded. The Shanghai Municipal Health Commission approved the establishment of the Shanghai Clinical Research Center for Bone Diseases in 2019. In 2021, Professor Zhang Zhenlin, the academic leader, initiated the establishment of the "Yangtze River Delta Osteoporosis and Osteopathy Center Prevention Alliance," which extends to 32 medical institutions in the Yangtze River Delta region.

Specialties

The department excels in diagnosing and treating challenging bone diseases, including primary osteoporosis, secondary osteoporosis due to various causes, as well as various complex and rare metabolic bone diseases and hereditary bone conditions such as osteogenesis imperfecta, hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia, primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, osteopetrosis, and deforming osteitis. Additionally, a specialized clinic for pediatric osteopathy is established to diagnose and treat metabolic bone disorders in children, while prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling are offered through genetic testing technology. Furthermore, the osteoporosis and fracture clinic at the National Center for Orthopedics provides clinical medication guidance for patients with osteoporotic fractures during the perioperative period and offers prevention and treatment strategies for re-fractures.
