On December 25, 2024, Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital officially launched the Specialized Capability Training and Enhancement Series for the Core Faculty Team of the Residency Training Program, marking a significant step toward elevating teaching quality. The first training session drew over 50 core faculty members from 21 residency training bases, including those from Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital, Shanghai Eighth People’s Hospital, and community grassroots bases.
In the first half of the training, Professor Xu Xiaolu, a renowned National Residency Evaluation and Supervision Expert from the First Affiliated Hospital of Naval Medical University, delivered a comprehensive lecture on Clinical Teaching Ward Round Strategies. Her presentation detailed the essential components of teaching ward rounds, including their purpose, organization, and execution. Emphasizing the integration of medical theory with clinical practice, Professor Xu underscored the importance of patient-centered care, compassion, and medical ethics. She inspired participants with the vision of nurturing residents into compassionate clinicians who embody both professional excellence and empathy.
In the second half of the session, Dr. Wang Yanpeng, Associate Chief Physician from the Internal Medicine specialty base, conducted a live demonstration of teaching ward rounds. Employing a structured “three-stage” methodology, he showcased real clinical scenarios, outlining specific teaching objectives, critical points, and common challenges. Faculty participants then engaged in a rigorous evaluation process, utilizing the National Residency Training Teaching Activity Guidelines’ ward round assessment form to provide feedback on preparation, implementation, skills, and overall execution. Following the demonstration, Professor Xu guided an in-depth discussion on refining teaching techniques. Topics included identifying key teaching moments, encouraging active resident participation, and avoiding overly didactic approaches. The lively exchange of ideas provided valuable insights, with participants expressing appreciation for the practical and innovative training.
The Specialized Capability Training Series represents a shift from generalized faculty training to a more focused and systematic approach. By addressing specific challenges identified in teaching assessments, the program aims to strengthen weak areas and enhance the teaching competence of residency program faculty. By fostering a culture of continuous improvement, the hospital strives to cultivate skilled and compassionate physicians who excel in their roles, ensuring the highest standards of patient care and medical education.
