Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Orthopaedic Material Innovation and Tissue Regeneration

In February 2021, the Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Orthopaedic Material Innovation and Tissue Regeneration (hereinafter referred to as the Engineering Technology Center) was officially approved. The Engineering Technology Center is committed to strengthening the core functions of orthopedic basic research, clinical trials, production transformation, standard formulation, consulting services, fostering the development of a number of orthopedic new materials and new products with independent intellectual property rights, promoting cutting-edge industrial innovation, and driving the development of orthopedic-related biomedical industry in Shanghai. Professor Zhang Changqing serves as the honorary director of the Engineering Technology Center, Professor Fan Cunyi serves as the director of the Engineering Technology Center and Academician Liu Changsheng serves as the director of the Technical Committee. The Engineering Technology Center has a high-level research and development team, including 5 academicians, more than 20 well-known experts and more than 70 senior researchers.

The Engineering Technology Center has established six research platforms:

  1. Research and development platform for bone and cartilage repair materials;
  2. Joint Reconstruction and Materials Research and Development Platform;
  3. Soft tissue Repair and Materials research and development Platform;
  4. Sports system Rehabilitation and equipment research and development platform;
  5. Orthopedic intelligent medical equipment research and development platform;
  6. Medical artificial intelligence and scientific and technological achievements transformation platform.

These platforms focus on orthopedic repair materials, rehabilitation equipment, artificial intelligence, medical diagnosis and treatment equipment and other fields to carry out cross-medical research, form a series of independent intellectual property rights, and obtain the national CFDA certification. The experimental area of the Engineering Technology Center spans 1500 square meters, equipped with over 100 pieces (sets) of equipment valued at more than 25 million yuan. Notably, the materials laboratory is equipped with cutting-edge scientific research equipment including Micro-CT, Mercury Injection Instrument, Circular Dichroism Spectrometer, Infrared Spectrometer, Nano Particle Size Meter, 3D Ceramic Printer, Electrostatic Spinning Machine and other high-end scientific research equipment,placing it at the forefront of research in China.

The Engineering Technology Center has established a team for compound management and transformation, focusing on the integration of scientific research with industry-university-research. Since 2020, the center has won a total of 172 national and municipal ministerial projects, including 70 national projects, with a total funding amount of 91.9 million yuan. In 2023 alone, the center obtained a total of 87 national and municipal ministerial-level projects, including 25 national projects. It has published 580 SCI papers, applied for more than 50 national patents, and advanced 5 products to the stage of preclinical performance evaluation and clinical trials.
